I’m afraid to fly.

The embarrassment and pain you felt the last time you flew on a plane still haunts you to this day. You remember just as if it was yesterday.

You were one of the last ones getting on the plane, walking down the aisle to get to your seat. When you located your seat, you reached to put your bag in the overhead compartment, and it and all the other overhead bins were full. You felt like everyone was staring at you, so you took your seat.

Of course, when you started to take your seat, the only one left was the middle seat between two smaller females. The person in the aisle seat gets up to let you sit down, and you maneuver to shove your two bags under the seat in front of you, trying not to hit the ladies next to you. One bag ended up in your lap.

You go to fasten your seatbelt, and no matter how much you tugged and pulled, it would not stretch far enough to attach. Those few seconds seemed like an eternity as you prayed that the ladies next to you didn’t see you struggling. Rather than asking the stewardess for a seatbelt extension, you just let the seatbelt rest on you rather than fastening it. The embarrassment consumed you, and you wished you could be one of the bags shoved under the seat where you could hide.

The humiliation from flying as an overweight person is an experience you never want to go through again.

The struggle is real!

Over the years, your weight has gone up and down, and the numbers keep increasing. Not a year goes by where you don’t struggle and fight to lose weight and keep it off. But every year, you feel defeated, as the excess pounds win the battle as they pack more and more on each year.

After a while of strict eating, you get bored and lose your motivation. You’re tired of counting calories, writing down everything that goes into your mouth. And you wonder, “Can I please chew my meals and stop drinking them?”

You are sick and tired of this constant battle with your weight. You remember when you were in your teens and early twenties and wanted to lose weight, it would practically fall off. Now, your weight won’t budge even if you only ate one piece of spinach a day. Why is losing weight so hard?

The gym is intimidating.

Going to the gym and working out is intimidating. When you get out of your car and start walking to the door, you feel everyone is watching you. Once you enter the gym, you search for the cardio machine in the back, where you think the least amount of people will see you.

Your workout begins. After a couple of minutes, you are gasping for air and fighting to stay on the machine. As you contemplate whether to stay on the device, you see all the skinny fit people walking by wearing their tank tops and fitted clothes showing off the body that you wished you had. They stand in front of the mirrors, looking at themselves, lifting, pushing, or pulling weights as the sweat rolls down their face, with movement and facial expressions as if it’s a breeze.

You lift your towel, strategically placed over the clock, to take a peek to see how long you’ve been on the cardio machine. As you see the time, you shout the word “NO” loudly in your head because, to your dismay, it’s only been ten minutes. Why do you feel you’ve been on the machine for 30 to 40 minutes? Then the words ‘WHY, WHY, WHY’ keep playing in your head.

Months have elapsed, and you still trudge to the gym, watching the fit get fitter. All the while, you only lost five pounds and question why you keep torturing yourself. Before you know it, you find excuses – staying later at work, running errands after work, doing things at home, or meeting up with friends − to avoid the gym where you feel intimidated and hopeless.

Lose weight and overcome your fears.

Take a moment and think about how your life would be 20, 30, or 50+ pounds lighter. Think about what you would do, how you would feel, and the clothes you would wear because you have lost weight.

See yourself making airline reservations, then flying while sitting comfortably in the seat on the plane and able to quickly and effortlessly fasten your seatbelt.

Imagine walking into the gym feeling confident and carefree. The people and the equipment that is used to intimidate you no longer have any effect on you.
